About Allen Bike Racks: In 1967, following his work on the aerospace technology for the Apollo missions, Harvard-trained physicist Dick Allen found himself out of a job due to government cutbacks. An avid cyclist and inventor, Allen identified a need for a bike-carrying device to transport his family's bicycles during their weekend trips to Cape Cod or the White Mountains of New Hampshire. Determined to find a solution, he transformed his garage hobby into a new industry.

Allen began drafting designs during the day and constructing them at night, using materials such as electrical conduit, metal strapping, and fire hose casings for padding. The first prototype of a trunk-mounted rack was tested on family trips and proved successful. Encouraged by this success, Allen founded Allen Bike Racks. By 1971, the racks were being sold nationally through major bicycle distributors.
